Placed in the heart of Chianti. In medieval age, Radda was the
center
of the League of Chianti and since that time preserves
the caratteristic elliptic shape, maintaining intact, on the oriental
side of the Chiantigiana road, the ancient structure.
In the middle ages powerful feudal families and local gentlemen build up numerous castles in the zone, but these fortitudes fell well soon under the control of Florence. The first news regarding the castle of Radda goes up again to the beginning of the XI century when the Republic in Florence organized the small communities of its territory in leagues, the castle of Radda became the chief town of the whole League of the Chianti. Of all the castles of the zone, only the Volpaia one is still preserved, while others as Albola and Monterinaldi, have preserved intact only some parts or have been turned into villas.
To the romanesque age it also goes up again the church of San Niccolò a Radda, as the churches of Albola, Bugialla, Livernano, Montemaione. From a romanesque nucleus is developed besides in the following centuries the convent of Saint Maria in Prato. Decidedly unusual for tied up characters to the architecture of the Florentine renaissance it is the church of Sant'Eufrosino a Volpaia, known as “The Commends”.
