Built in 1203 on the top of a hill, Monteriggioni became well soon city of garrison.
It’s totally surrounded by tall boundaries with 14 towers fortified in order to control the northern confinements of the senese dominoes against possible invasions of the Florentine armies.
Dante was so stricken from these fortifications to compare them in a verse of the Hell,: "... Monteriggion that of towers it is crowned..." to the giants that overhang the edge of the well of traitors.
Inside the building entourage the town offers a vast square, a romanesque churche, some houses and shops of craftsmanship, restaurants and shops in which the good wines of the
Monteriggioni Castle are sold.
