Of Etruscan-Roman origin, Castelnuovo Berardenga due its
name to the castle built on the end of the XIV century from the
Republic of Siena.
The common extends him among the hilly territories of Chianti and the senesi clays, absorbed in a splendid landscape that, together with the presence of warm sources, has favored the developing of human installations testified by numerous rests of the past.
The outskirtses of Castelnuovo Berardenga are rich of testimonies of the past.
The memory of ancient religious associations remained in Pievasciata, San Felice and Pacina. Medieval features are found again in the “canonica” of Cerreto, the churches of Quercegrossa, Catignano, Guistrigona and in the octagonal chapel of Sant'Ansano a Dofana.
The two great monastic complexes present in the zone are the monastery of San Salvatore and the Chartreuse of Pontignano.
Numerous are the castles, among which Quercegrossa, Aiola, Selvole, Pievasciata and Cerreto as in Sesta and Cetamura, both in downfall and San Gusmè, that was developed also to outside of its walls in order to become, together with Vagliagli, the greatest external area of the place.
Many castles survive only in arch document, while others have been turned into villas.
